Scientific Confusion Empty Scientific Confusion

Post by BasilMeer Tue Sep 14, 2010 7:07 am

Okay I am seriously confused. It's not that much of a big thing but, my teacher says that the chemical equation of water is H2+O2 and my science book says that the formula is H2+O. Dude, which is the right formula?

H2O2 is hydrogen peroxide isn't it? I'm sure your book is right, but heck, you never know you skipped something critical while doodling during classes Very Happy

Water is H20.
If your teacher says otherwise, your teacher is wrong.

Lol I never doodle in class! I had asked her again about it and she started saying that it depends on the Catalyst on what product we get. I think her concept is not perfect on it.

Ugh, water is H2O. H2O2 would be another oxide but I'm not sure wich one. Maybe hidrogen dioxide?

Your teach is quite correct.
In mixing (adding) elements, when using gases like H, you should put it ALWAYS in the equation with the subscript 2.

For example, this is wrong:
H + O,
and this is right:
H2 + O2.

And then, if you're going to solve for the resulting chem. eqn, now drop the 2 from the H and O, and do the normal criss-crossing.

H, and O, using valence electron 1 and 2 respectively... (if you use 2 for H, then you get dihydrogen dioxide or simply hydrogen peroxide as you guys said)
So:

H(1->) O(<-2) = H20. Water.

Remember again,
H2 + O2 is not H2O2.
When using gases in equations, you should always put the subscript 2.

If your teacher says otherwise, consult or ask her questions! ...Or at least, let her explain first.

H2O has always been water and always will be. But who knows, it could be both but I'm not sure.
I've just checked the internet. It says that it's possible for hydrogen peroxide to decompose into a combination of water and oxygen.
